Beatitude (1)

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Mt. 5:3)

The poor in spirit Christian  ...

  1. Knows that he is a sinner (Rom. 3:23).

He knows that he is the worst sinner (1 Tim. 1:15).

  1. Knows that nothing good dwells in him (Rom. 7:18).

He knows that he cannot do good works by himself (v. 19).

He acknowledges that the indwelling Spirit is doing good works.

  1. Knows that he cannot be saved by his own good works (Eph. 2:9).

He acknowledges that he was saved only by the death of Jesus on the cross (Rom. 10:9; 1 Thess. 5:9).

He believes that he was saved only by God’s grace (Lk. 8:50; Eph. 2:8; 2 Tim. 1:9).

  1. Relies completely on God (Deut. 30:20; Ps. 56:4, 10, 11; 2 Cor. 1:19).

He doesn’t lean on his own understanding but trust in the Lord (Prov. 3:5-6).

He prays always (Ps. 62:8; Isa. 26:13).

  1. Is humble (Micah 6:8; Mt. 11:29; Phil. 2:3; Jam. 4:6; 1 Pet. 5:6).

He doesn’t boast himself and doesn’t seek his own glory (Ps. 115:1).

He boasts only the Lord and seeks His glory (1 Cor. 10:31; 2 Cor. 10:17).
