Beatitude (1)
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Mt. 5:3)
The poor in spirit Christian ...
- Knows that he is a sinner (Rom. 3:23).
He knows that he is the worst sinner (1 Tim. 1:15).
- Knows that nothing good dwells in him (Rom. 7:18).
He knows that he cannot do good works by himself (v. 19).
He acknowledges that the indwelling Spirit is doing good works.
- Knows that he cannot be saved by his own good works (Eph. 2:9).
He acknowledges that he was saved only by the death of Jesus on the cross (Rom. 10:9; 1 Thess. 5:9).
He believes that he was saved only by God’s grace (Lk. 8:50; Eph. 2:8; 2 Tim. 1:9).
- Relies completely on God (Deut. 30:20; Ps. 56:4, 10, 11; 2 Cor. 1:19).
He doesn’t lean on his own understanding but trust in the Lord (Prov. 3:5-6).
He prays always (Ps. 62:8; Isa. 26:13).
- Is humble (Micah 6:8; Mt. 11:29; Phil. 2:3; Jam. 4:6; 1 Pet. 5:6).
He doesn’t boast himself and doesn’t seek his own glory (Ps. 115:1).
He boasts only the Lord and seeks His glory (1 Cor. 10:31; 2 Cor. 10:17).
