How was Samson deceived?
I thought about how Samson was deceived by Delilah (Judg. 16):
- First, Samson didn’t know who was behind Delilah.
Samson didn’t know that the lords of the Philistines were the ones who told Delilah,
“Entice him (Samson), and see where his great strength lies and how we may overpower him
that we may bind him to afflict him. Then we will each give you eleven hundred pieces of silver” (Jugd. 16:5).
- Then, we see Samson getting closer to the truth as he was lying to Delilah three times (vv. 6-17).
When he lied to her third time, he mentioned about his hair (v. 13).
- And then Samson’s soul was annoyed to death when Delilah pressed him daily with her words (v. 16).
This reminded me the Potiphar’s wife who seduced Joseph every day (Gen. 39:10).
Joseph didn’t listen to her to lie beside her or be with her (v. 10).
But Samson not only told Delilah all that was in his heart he also slept on her knees
(Judg. 16:18-19).
How could he sleep on her knees after telling her that his strength was from his hair?
