The Wisdom That Delights Our Souls

"For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul" (Proverbs 2:10).

What brings you joy these days? Do you have joy in your heart these days? How is your soul? Does your soul experience joy?

In today’s passage, Proverbs 2:10, the Bible tells us, “When wisdom enters your heart, your soul will delight.” What is it about wisdom that can bring joy to our souls? In Ecclesiastes 7:11, the Bible shows us that the benefit of wisdom is that it gives us an eternal perspective. In other words, wisdom helps us to live for the eternal, guiding us to live for eternity, making wisdom good, useful, and beautiful.

As King Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 3:11, God has given us a heart that yearns for eternity, and it is wisdom that satisfies that longing for eternity. Therefore, wisdom is good, useful, and beautiful. When this good, useful, and beautiful wisdom of God enters our hearts, we begin to live with an eternal perspective, living for the eternal things. We participate in God’s soul-saving work to rescue His people whom He has loved and chosen since before the foundation of the world. Because of this, God allows our souls to experience joy.

Particularly, when God uses us to boldly proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, and dying souls accept Jesus as their Savior and are saved, our souls can’t help but rejoice. The Apostle Paul had this joy in his soul. By preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to dying souls and laboring for the salvation of souls, Paul referred to the Philippian believers as “my joy and crown” (Philippians 4:1). Paul, who called the fruit of soul-winning “my joy and crown,” rejoiced in his soul because of Jesus, who was his joy, his life, and his hope (Hymn 82).

Do we, like Paul, have this joy in our souls?
