Ephesians 5:22–33

The Model of a Right Marital Relationship

We live in a time when it is difficult to find healthy models of marriage and family. As a result, many young Christians hold negative views about marriage. However, the fundamental reason behind these negative perceptions lies in the curse that resulted from the sin of the first human couple, Adam and Eve, as recorded in Genesis. Adam and Eve, who were meant to be a model couple, disobeyed God’s word and ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which led to the destruction of the family.

But we, as Christian couples, must understand that we are no longer under that curse. We look to and follow the model of Jesus Christ—the second or last Adam—and His bride, the Church. This is the blessing we have received as people living in the era of the "New Covenant."

Ephesians 5:22–33 describes the beautiful marriage that God intended through Adam and Eve before they sinned. This is the true model of a marital relationship that we are to look toward and pursue.
