The Result of Justification (1): Enjoying Peace with God
"Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 5:1).
In Romans 5:1, the Bible says, "... let us enjoy peace with God." The first result of justification is enjoying peace with God (v. 1). We have been reconciled to God only through our Lord Jesus Christ (v. 1) (past tense). When we were "still weak" (v. 6), when we were "still sinners" (v. 8), when we were "enemies" of God (v. 10), Christ died for us (v. 8), and through Jesus' blood, we were justified (v. 9), so we have been reconciled to God (v. 10) [Method/means of justification: faith ("Therefore, since we have been justified by faith..." (5:1))]. God, through Christ, reconciled us to Himself (2 Corinthians 5:18). Therefore, we must enjoy peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1) (present tense). We, who were enemies of God (v. 10), have now become children of God (Romans 8:16), and can cry out to God, "Abba, Father" (v. 15), only through our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the one mediator between God and us (1 Timothy 2:5) (Romans 5:1). We have already been reconciled to God only through our Lord Jesus Christ (past), and now, we must enjoy peace with God (present).
The phrase "enjoy peace with God" here also means "rejoice in peace with God" [See also: (Romans 5:2) "Through Him, we have obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God," (5:11) "More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation."].
So, how should we enjoy peace with God? We should enjoy the peace of mind that God gives us from heaven. For example, Paul and Silas, enjoying the peace of mind that God gave them, prayed and praised God even in the deep prison (Acts 16:24-25). When we enjoy the peace of mind that God gives us from heaven, we too can praise God in this way: "Wherever I am, my heart is always at peace, the peace that Jesus gives me is always full" (New Hymnal 408 "Wherever I Am," v. 1), "When the clouds rise in the sky and the great trumpet sounds, the Lord will come to judge the world, but my soul will not be afraid, my soul is at peace, my soul, my soul is at peace" (New Hymnal 413 "The Way I Walk," v. 4 and chorus).
In order to enjoy the peace of mind that God gives us from heaven, we must obey Jesus' double commandment. See Matthew 22:37-40: "Jesus replied, 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
When we keep Jesus' double commandment, God's love is truly perfected in us (1 John 2:5). As God's love is perfected in us, when we live in the light, there is no hindrance in us [there is nothing to accuse us (Modern Bible translation)] (v. 10). Therefore, we enjoy the peace of mind that God gives us from heaven.
And in order to enjoy the peace of mind that God gives us from heaven, we must look to Jesus Christ, who is seated at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19; Hebrews 8:1; 10:12) and intercedes for us (Romans 8:34), "the author and perfecter of our faith" (Hebrews 12:2, Modern Bible translation).
The result of justification is peace with God. Since we have all been justified (justified) by faith through our Lord Jesus Christ alone, we should enjoy peace with God (Romans 5:1). I hope that you and I will not only know it in our heads, but also taste and experience peace with God in our lives.
